12 November 2025

17:00 – 18:30

Location TBC

Lead Organiser/s BirdLife International

Malaysia hosts several of the most important wintering sites for migratory shorebirds in Southeast Asia, notably Bako-Buntal Bay (the country’s first Flyway Network Sites), Teluk Air Tawar-Kuala Muda and the North-Central Selangor Coast. Three of the best-known, threatened shorebirds in the EAAF, the Spotted Greenshank, Great Knot and the Far Eastern Curlew, winter in Malaysia’s coastal wetlands in significant numbers and has been the focus on substantial conservation work in recent years.

This side event aims to provide a platform to share recent development and progress on provisional and existing Flyway Network Sites in Malaysia. There will also be a panel discussion involving government representatives, researchers and conservation practitioners to identify existing challenges, opportunities and next steps. This is also an opportunity to establish a network of shorebird experts in Malaysia to strengthen collaboration and mutual support in advancing flyway conservation efforts. A new publication on the shorebirds of the North-Central Selangor Coast and its potential as a Flyway Network Site for Malaysia will be launched at this event.
