Location Mactan 1

Background

Conservation of migratory land birds has long been neglected in Asia but recent studies
showed many species of migratory land birds are declining at alarming rates (such as the
Yellow-breasted Bunting). A monitoring scheme of land birds has been established in North
East Asian countries (Russia, China, RO Korea and Japan) since 2015 and there is a need to extend the cooperation to wintering countries in the EAAF. After discussion with partners in the EAAF, the Wild Bird Society of Japan submitted a decision paper on establishing an ad hoc committee to discuss the inclusion of land birds to the scope of the EAAFP for the decision in MOP 13. This site-event is for improving understanding on issues related to land birds amongst partners of the EAAFP.

Objectives

The purpose of this meeting is to reach a consensus among countries along the EAAF on the process of developing a platform on conservation and monitoring of migratory land birds along
the EAAF.

Expected Outcomes

The output will be a report on recommendations of an ad hoc committee on land bird monitoring and conservation in EAAF countries.
